Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of traditional, ecological, and improved rice cultivation systems on the morphological traits, water consumption, yield, and some yield components of the Hashemi rice cultivar, in order to identify the most suitable cultivation system for this variety. A field experiment was carried out using a randomized complete block design with three replications in Roshanabad village, Babol city, Mazandaran Province, during the 2022-2023 cultivation season. In the traditional and ecological system II , continuous flooding irrigation was maintained until near harvest, whereas in the improved and ecological system I, flooding was applied continuously up to the stem elongation stage and then switched to intermittent irrigation. Despite the reduction in water consumption in the ecological system I and improved system compared with the conventional system (by 10.7% and 8%, respectively), no significant differences were observed in economic yield, biological yield, or thousand-grain weight. The highest plant height and number of tillers in all measurement stages were recorded under the improved cropping system. Water consumption showed a significant negative correlation (r = -0.60) with plant height at the second measurement, and a significant positive correlation with plant height at the fifth measurement (r = 0.78) and number of tillers at the third measurement (r = 0.57). The ecological cultivation system I (SRI-I), with lower water consumption and the highest recorded economic yield compared to the conventional system, represents a suitable option for sustainable production of the Hashemi rice cultivar under the climatic conditions of northern Iran.
