Abstract
Background and Objective: Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is one of the most important cereal crops worldwide, and its yield is mainly influenced by genotype × environment (G×E) interactions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the stability of grain and biological yield in different barley cultivars and to determine the contribution of selected agronomic traits in explaining this interaction. Materials and Methods: In this study, 37 Iranian and European barley cultivars were evaluated across five different environments using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data analysis was performed using univariate stability methods and the AMMI model (Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction). Stability indices, including regression coefficient, coefficient of determination, and the AMMI Stability Value (ASV), were also calculated. Findings: Combined analysis of variance showed that the genotype × environment interaction was significant for all traits. The cultivar AIACE exhibited the highest grain yield (567.30 g m⁻²), whereas ASTARTIS and Aras had the lowest yields. Based on the ASV statistic, EXPLORA was the most stable cultivar (0.31), while PONENTE was the least stable (14.23). Cultivars AIRONE, ALFEO, Karun, and EXPLORA also demonstrated high coefficients of determination for grain yield. For biological yield, AIACE and Mahour showed the highest stability. Conclusion: The results indicated a high level of genetic diversity among cultivars and significant differences in their performance across environments, reflecting a meaningful genotype × environment interaction. Therefore, identifying cultivars with stable performance under diverse environmental conditions can play a crucial role in breeding programs.
