Effect of melatonin pretreatment of seed and transplant on rice (Oryza sativa L.) tolerance to bentazone + MCPA

Abstract

Background and Objective: increasing rice tolerance to the bentazone + MCPA, using melatonin hormone.

Materials and Methods: A factorial experiment was conducted in 2013 at the Amol Rice Research Institute. The first factor involved doses of 0, 575, 1150 and 1725 grams of active ingredient per hectare, and the second one involved melatonin application at four levels: seed treatment with water, seed pretreatment with melatonin, seed pretreatment with water plus foliar spraying of seedlings with melatonin, and seed pretreatment plus foliar spraying of seedlings with melatonin.

Results: Melatonin significantly increased weed control efficiency from 5.2 to 9.5 percent compared to the control. The highest control was achieved in treatment of 1150 g of herbicide per hectare with combined by seed and foliar application of melatonin and also with the application of 1725 g of herbicide per hectare in all melatonin application methods. The highest rice leaf area index was produced by 1150 and 1725 g of herbicide per hectare in all melatonin application methods. The control treatment had the lowest biological and grain yield (4.9 and 2.2 tons per hectare, respectively), the lowest number of filled grains per panicle (57.9 grains), the highest number of empty grains per panicle (5.5 grains), and the lowest thousand-grain weight (14.9 grams). The combined application of melatonin and herbicide improved the above agronomic traits in rice.

Conclusion: Combined seed treatment and seedling foliar spraing with melatonin, not only improves rice grain yield and yield components, but also improves the efficiency of chemical weed control.
