Background and Objectives: The study was conducted to explore the use of plant extracts with allelochemical properties as natural herbicides and alternatives to chemical pesticides, aligning with environmentally friendly management practices.
Methodology: The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized factorial design in the laboratory and educational greenhouse of Razi University of Kermanshah. Laboratory studies were performed on ethanolic extracts from papaver, Harmel, fenugreek, artichoke, peanut, camellia, walnut, and pomegranate plants at various concentrations, alongside the herbicide trifularin. The extracts that exhibited the most significant inhibition in the laboratory were subsequently tested under greenhouse conditions by spraying them on oat weeds, along with the Glyphosate herbicide.
Results: Artichoke and Papaver extracts at 75 and 100 g/L concentrations showed the lowest viability and highest inhibition levels in lab conditions. Greenhouse studies confirmed that 100 g/L extracts resulted in the lowest growth traits and highest inhibition percentage for oat seedlings. This concentration decreased seedling height, root length, root and shoot weight by 16.80%, 22.16%, 58.33%, 64.86%, 36.55%, and 33.82%, respectively, compared to controls. The 100 g/L ethanol extract also showed the lowest levels of greenness, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic efficiency (Pi), and maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm).
Conclusion: Artichoke and Papaver extracts can serve as natural herbicides and effective management strategies for controlling weeds, minimizing toxic residues and environmental damage.
