Introduction: This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of nitrogen fertilizer treatments on the quantitative and qualitative yield of two cultivars of forage amaranthuse under the climatic conditions of Gorgan.
Materials and methods:
The experiment were conducted in split plots in a basic complete block design with three replications for two years (2023 and 2024) at the Gorgan Agricultural Research Station. Nitrogen fertilizer treatments at four levels (no nitrogen fertilizer, 50, 100 and 150 kg.ha-1 nitrogen fertilizer per hectare) were applied in the main plots, and two cultivars of the amaranthuse (Sim and Kharkovsky) were placed in the subplots.
Results
The results of combined analysis showed that the effect of nitrogen fertilizer was significant on all traits except fiber insoluble in acid detergent. The simple effect of cultivar was significant only on forage quality traits (protein percentage, fiber insoluble in neutral detergent and fiber insoluble in acid detergent). The interaction effects of cultivar × nitrogen fertilizer amounts on the studied traits were not significant. With increasing nitrogen fertilizer, fresh and dry forage yield and protein percentage increased significantly. The highest fresh and dry forage yield was obtained from the treatment of applying 150 kg of nitrogen fertilizer at the rate of 65.3 and 7.7 tons per hectare, respectively.
Conclusion: For cultivating forage Amaranthuse in the climatic conditions of Gorgan, it is recommended to apply 100 kg of nitrogen fertilizer (one-third of nitrogen fertilizer at the time of planting and the remainder at the 6-8 leaf stage as a fertilizer).
